In Yoga Sutra 2.33, Sage Patanjali introduces a profound psychological tool: *Vitarka Badhane Pratipaksha Bhavanam* (Wikipedia).

When negative, destructive thoughts (*Vitarkas*) disturb mental peace, Patanjali advises us to intentionally substitute their opposite, positive counter-thoughts (*Pratipaksha Bhavana*).

What is Pratipaksha Bhavana in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras?

Pratipaksha Bhavana (Yoga Sutra 2.33) is the classical yogic practice of consciously cultivating an opposite, positive thought (Bhavana) whenever negative, destructive thoughts (Vitarkas) arise. It serves as an ancient cognitive technology to break compulsive mental habits and restore neural equilibrium.

Modern clinical research in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) verifies that actively replacing negative automatic thoughts alters synaptic connectivity in the prefrontal cortex (PubMed).
