Chart illustrating the 24 Tattvas of Samkhya philosophy and creation at Samyut Yoga.

Samkhya philosophy is one of the oldest dualistic systems (*Shat Darshanas*) of Indian thought (Wikipedia). Systematized by Sage Kapila, Samkhya provides the theoretical foundation for Patanjali's Raja Yoga and Ayurvedic medicine.

In this article, we map the 24 Tattvas (principles of cosmic evolution) and explain how understanding Samkhya liberates consciousness from physical identification.

What are the 24 Tattvas in Samkhya philosophy?

In Samkhya cosmology, the 24 Tattvas represent the evolution of manifest nature (Prakriti) from unmanifest intelligence (Mahat/Buddhi), ego (Ahamkara), and mind (Manas), down to the 5 subtle elements (Tanmatras), 10 sensory-motor organs (Indriyas), and 5 gross physical elements (Bhutas), all witnessed by pure spirit (Purusha).

The Dual Pillars: Purusha & Prakriti

Samkhya divides existence into two ultimate, independent realities:

1. Purusha (Pure Consciousness): Unchanging, formless, unattached, infinite witness awareness. 2. Prakriti (Primal Matter/Nature): Dynamic, evolving matter composed of the three *Gunas* (*Sattva*, *Rajas*, *Tamas*).

The 24 Tattvas Evolution Hierarchy

| Evolutionary Level | Tattvas Included | Function in Human Mind & Body | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Unmanifest Origin | *Prakriti* (1) | The source matrix of all physical & mental phenomena | | Higher Intellect | *Mahat / Buddhi* (1) | Discriminative wisdom, intuition, & decision making | | Ego / I-Maker | *Ahamkara* (1) | Self-identity, ownership, & sense of "I-ness" | | Lower Mind | *Manas* (1) | Processing sensory data, desires, & linear thought | | Cognitive Organs | *Jnanendriyas* (5) | Hearing, touch, sight, taste, smell | | Action Organs | *Karmendriyas* (5) | Speech, grasping, movement, excretion, reproduction | | Subtle Potentials | *Tanmatras* (5) | Sound, touch, form, flavor, odor potentials | | Gross Elements | *Mahabhutas* (5) | Space (*Akasha*), Air (*Vayu*), Fire (*Agni*), Water (*Jala*), Earth (*Prithvi*) |
